Imagine yourself immersed in the warmth of sun-kissed beaches, surrounded by lush rainforests, and riding world-class waves. Sounds heavenly, doesn’t it?! Your destination? None other than Costa Rica – a haven for surf enthusiasts, boasting a breathtaking coastline and a dynamic surf culture. By far this is one of my favorite travel destinations! In this post I’ll share with you a detailed itinerary to assist you in crafting the perfect surf trip to Costa Rica!
Day 1: Arrival in San Jose
- Fly into Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, Costa Rica.
- Check into your accommodation.
- Unsolicited Advice:
- I recommend choosing a centrally located hotel or hostel. This will make getting around easier if you only plan on staying for 1 day.
- Lodging Recommendation:
- Consider settling into a cozy hotel like “Hotel Grano de Oro,” known for its colonial charm and proximity to downtown San Jose.
- Unsolicited Advice:
- Spend the first day exploring the vibrant capital city, sampling local cuisine, and getting acclimated to the Pura Vida lifestyle.

- For a taste of local flavors, dine at “Restaurante Kalú,” offering a diverse menu inspired by the Costa Rican culture. There is also an adjoining Art gallery you can explore before or after your meal.

Day 2: Head to Tamarindo
- Take a 30 minute domestic flight or 4-5 hour scenic drive to Tamarindo on the Pacific coast, a renowned surf destination.

- For a true surf experience, check out Surfer’s Retreat Hostel, fostering a vibrant community of wave enthusiasts.

- Spend the afternoon exploring Tamarindo Beach and getting familiar with the surf conditions.

Day 3-5: Tamarindo Surf Days
- Enroll in a surf school if you’re a beginner or rent equipment if you’re an experienced surfer.

- Recharge at Cafe Mar Azul, a local spot with good food and great outdoor seating. They serve local cuisine and American style. My kiddos loved their chicken tenders and French fries!

Day 6 -9: Travel to Nosara
- Travel (by car or shuttle) to Nosara, a hidden gem on the Nicoya Peninsula known for its pristine beaches and consistent surf.

- Find tranquility at Zen Oasis Resort in Nosara, providing a serene escape surrounded by nature.

- Book a surf lesson or explore the waves on your own at Playa Guiones.
- Take a break from surfing to explore the rich biodiversity at Nosara Wildlife Reserve or
- Unwind and rejuvenate with a yoga session at Nosara Yoga Haven
- Take a nature hike or visit the Ostional Wildlife Refuge to witness the magic of turtle nesting.

- Indulge in a culinary adventure at Sunset Grill, offering a blend of local and international cuisine.
Day 10-13: Explore Santa Teresa
- Drive or take a ferry and drive to Santa Teresa, a bohemian surf town on the Nicoya Peninsula.
- Check into your accommodation.
- Experience the eclectic blend of surf culture, yoga studios, and beachfront cafes.
- Go horseback Riding with Pura Vida Adventures to explore the scenic beauty that Santa Teresa has to offer.
- Visit Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve
- Don’t miss the breathtaking sunset views at the iconic Santa Teresa Beach.

- Experience local flavors at Soda Típica
Day 14: Departure day
- Depending on your departure time, you may have some free time in Santa Teresa.
- Depart for San Jose to catch your international flight.
