Imagine yourself immersed in the warmth of sun-kissed beaches, surrounded by lush rainforests, and riding world-class waves. Sounds heavenly, doesn’t it?! Your destination? None other than Costa Rica – a haven for surf enthusiasts, boasting a breathtaking coastline and a dynamic surf culture. By far this is one of my favorite travel destinations! In this post I’ll share with you a detailed itinerary to assist you in crafting the perfect surf trip to Costa Rica!

Day 1: Arrival in San Jose

  • Fly into Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, Costa Rica.
  • Check into your accommodation.
    • Unsolicited Advice:
      • I recommend choosing a centrally located hotel or hostel. This will make getting around easier if you only plan on staying for 1 day.
    • Lodging Recommendation:
      • Consider settling into a cozy hotel like “Hotel Grano de Oro,” known for its colonial charm and proximity to downtown San Jose.
  • Spend the first day exploring the vibrant capital city, sampling local cuisine, and getting acclimated to the Pura Vida lifestyle.
    • Restaurant Recommendation:
      • For a taste of local flavors, dine at “Restaurante Kalú,” offering a diverse menu inspired by the Costa Rican culture. There is also an adjoining Art gallery you can explore before or after your meal.

Day 2: Head to Tamarindo

  • Take a 30 minute domestic flight or 4-5 hour scenic drive to Tamarindo on the Pacific coast, a renowned surf destination.
  • Check into your accommodation.
    • Lodging Recommendation:
      • For a true surf experience, check out Surfer’s Retreat Hostel, fostering a vibrant community of wave enthusiasts.
  • Spend the afternoon exploring Tamarindo Beach and getting familiar with the surf conditions.
  • Activity Recommendation:
    • Enhance your skills with lessons from Tamarindo Surf School.

Day 3-5: Tamarindo Surf Days

  • Enroll in a surf school if you’re a beginner or rent equipment if you’re an experienced surfer.
    • Recommendation:
      • Tamarindo Surf School
  • Explore the vibrant town, enjoy local nightlife, and try some traditional Costa Rican dishes.
    • Restaurant Recommendation:
      • Recharge at Cafe Mar Azul, a local spot with good food and great outdoor seating. They serve local cuisine and American style. My kiddos loved their chicken tenders and French fries!

Day 6 -9: Travel to Nosara

  • Travel (by car or shuttle) to Nosara, a hidden gem on the Nicoya Peninsula known for its pristine beaches and consistent surf.
  • Check into your accommodation.
    • Lodging Recommendation:
      • Find tranquility at Zen Oasis Resort in Nosara, providing a serene escape surrounded by nature.
  • Book a surf lesson or explore the waves on your own at Playa Guiones.
  • Take a break from surfing to explore the rich biodiversity at Nosara Wildlife Reserve or
    • Unwind and rejuvenate with a yoga session at Nosara Yoga Haven
    • Take a nature hike or visit the Ostional Wildlife Refuge to witness the magic of turtle nesting.
  • Restaurant Recommendation:
    • Indulge in a culinary adventure at Sunset Grill, offering a blend of local and international cuisine.

Day 10-13: Explore Santa Teresa

  • Drive or take a ferry and drive to Santa Teresa, a bohemian surf town on the Nicoya Peninsula.
  • Check into your accommodation.
  • Experience the eclectic blend of surf culture, yoga studios, and beachfront cafes.
    • Go horseback Riding with Pura Vida Adventures to explore the scenic beauty that Santa Teresa has to offer.
